Looking Back, Looking Forward: A History of Diversity and Inclusion in the Nation’s Weather Service (101st AMS Annual Meeting)

Through a series of case studies involving several individuals whose stories are known, this presentation will examine the difficulties that African Americans have experienced in serving the nation’s weather service—be it the Signal Service, the U.S. Weather Bureau, or the National Weather Service. The presentation will also touch upon the larger issue of diversity and inclusion in meteorology and discuss some of the ways in which NOAA/NWS and AMS have addressed the dearth of African Americans in the atmospheric sciences.
